Enzymes are bio-catalysts which can catalyse more than 5000 biochemical reactions. They enhance the reaction rate many million times faster by lowering the activation energy barrier. The chemical industry employs various conditions such as organic solvents (i.e. nonaqueous environments), high temperatures and pressure, metal catalysts for performing such chemical reactions. The enzyme/nature can perform even advanced chemical transformations in aqueous environments at moderate temperature. Consequently, a paradigm shift is clearly needed from this traditional approach by the chemical industry to bio-chemical approach.

Many of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) used in drug formulations are chiral molecules. These molecules have ‘left’ or ‘right’ handedness, i.e. they are mirror images of each other (enantiomers) of which, typically only one of the forms is biologically active. Enzymes are natural bio-catalysts used to convert the substrate to the specific pure enantiomeric form with high yield. QuantumzymeTM is developing new enzymes for production of APIs of high commercial interest using in-silico protocol called QZyme Workbench™. Examples of engineered enzymes include improved transaminases for bulky substrates (Voss et. al., 2018) and keto-reductases.
QuantumzymeTM has developed high-activity Phospholipase A (PLA) variants at neutral and acidic pH conditions for applications in the food industry. The in-silico designed PLA variants were verified to have high activity in the laboratory assays.
Various enzymes are used in the textile industry for texturing and finishing materials for an aesthetic appearance. QuantumzymeTM is developing new cellulase (Endoglucanase) enzymes for applications in the textile industry.
